"Ormonde" was built by Orient Lines in 1917 as a troopship [postcard].
She served the UK - Suez - Australia route between the wars. Converted
to one-class in 1933. Troop carrier in WWII. Returned to commercial service
in 1947, again on the Europe - Australia route. She was scraped in Scotland
in 1952.
A trivial coincidence - the Ormonde was the ship that Boy Charlton travelled
to France onboard, on his way to the 1924 Olympics in Paris. Boy Charlton
returned to Australia on the Tahiti later that year and Harry went to
see him off in San Francisco. Perhaps not that much of a coincidence considering
that there were not many options available for inter-hemisphere travel
in the 1920s.
An excellent series of postcards and photos of the
Ormonde, including interior shots is available.
