Harry's Ships

RMS Homeric

RMS Homeric (prev. Columbus)

New York to Southampton

The Homeric started life as the German vessel "Columbus".

The hull of "Columbus" was originally launched in 1913 for the German Norddeutscher Lloyd Line but remained unfinished for the duration of WWI.

In 1919 "Columbus" was ceded to Britain, sold (or given as replacement?) to the White Star Line and was completed in 1920 as a coal burning ship (even though this technology was out of date). It was not until 1922 that she was finally delivered the Britain and renamed "Homeric".

In 1923 she was converted to oil and in early 1924 was given a refit. She was slow (at least 20% slower than other ships of the time) but apparently was very stable and was popular for this reason.

She was scraped in Scotland in 1936 after only 13 years of actual service.

[After much searching and confusion - mostly due to the name changes mentioned above - I found most of this information at this excellent ocean liners site. I have subsequently also found this reference which has a few nice variations on the above postcard.]

Harry's other ships:

RMS Tahiti (Sydney to San Francisco); and

SS Ormonde (Southampton to Sydney).
