Technical Stuff
These letters are best viewed with Firefox or any other standards compliant browser
with javascript enabled.
Internet Explorer 6 will do but not all features are available. There
are a couple of techniques I've used that you should be aware of as they
should enhance your journey.
Mouse Over
When you put your mouse over
most postcards and some
photos you will see the reverse side of the image.
Try it on the passport as an example.
Harry's Links Window
There are many links
to other people's and organisation's sites in the letters.
When you click on one, a new window
will open. If you resize this window to the best size for your computer's display
characteristics and then LEAVE IT OPEN, the next time you click on another
link the same window will be reused (with the same size etc). To get back
to the letter (while leaving this open) just click on the letter's
window (which should still be visible) to resume your letter reading.
Photo album pages
Some web pages also contain
one or more pages from
Harry's photo album, as per this example. If you
click on a single photo in the page, that photograph will
be displayed in the "Harry's Links Window".
Regrettably many photos
have been eaten away by time and the chemicals found in the album paper.
The following technique does not work in Internet Explorer: If you click on
a larger section of the brown paper part of the page (eg. the spine) a
larger version of the page will display.
By the way, this page from the album is the inside of the front cover.
Regrettably, it is not known who these men are but I suspect one is Harry's father?
Auto resizing
If the photos are too large you may be able to switch on "auto-resizing
of images" in your browser (unless you have a very old browser).
Switching this on has the advantage of allowing you to toggle between
shrunken images and bigger images (bigger images allowing you to see fine
detail in the photos such as faces). If you need help switching this option
on or off, or you want to know how to toggle between big images and shrunken
images, click on either Firefox
or Internet
Explorer (depending on the browser you are using) or feel free to
contact
me if you're not sure.
